The Bees of Notre Dame: How the Cathedral’s Rooftop Hives Survived the Fire

When fire swept through Notre-Dame Cathedral in 2019, three beehives sat on a rooftop below. Discover the remarkable story of the bees that survived and Paris's tradition of urban beekeeping.

High above the streets of Paris, honey bees once lived in one of the world's most extraordinary apiaries: on the roof of Notre-Dame Cathedral.

Then, on April 15, 2019, disaster struck.

A devastating fire tore through Notre-Dame, destroying its iconic spire and much of the cathedral's roof. As the world watched the tragedy unfold, another question emerged among beekeepers and bee lovers:

What happened to the bees?

Remarkably, they survived.

Why Were There Bees at Notre Dame?

The beehives were installed on a lower roof of Notre-Dame in 2013 as part of an urban beekeeping initiative.

Three hives sat approximately 30 meters below the cathedral's main roof, overlooking Paris and the Seine.

The colonies were cared for by French beekeeper Nicolas Géant.

Keeping bees at Notre-Dame placed the cathedral within a much larger urban beekeeping movement in Paris, where hives can be found on rooftops, in gardens, and near some of the city's most recognizable landmarks.

Did the Notre Dame Bees Survive the Fire?

Yes.

After the fire, images showed that the three hives remained standing.

The colonies' location appears to have played an important role. They were situated on a lower roof away from the worst of the flames that consumed the cathedral's upper structure and spire.

But what about the smoke?

Bees respond to smoke differently than humans do.

Beekeepers have deliberately used smoke around honey bee colonies for generations. Smoke can interfere with the bees' alarm communication and often causes them to focus on consuming honey.

That doesn't mean smoke is harmless or that the bees somehow understood a fire was occurring.

Rather, the location of the hives and the biology of the colony helped give Notre-Dame's bees a remarkable chance of surviving the catastrophe.

The Beekeeper Waiting for an Answer

For Nicolas Géant, the days following the fire were filled with uncertainty.

He couldn't immediately access the cathedral to inspect his colonies.

Photographs provided some hope because the hives themselves appeared intact. Eventually, activity around the hives provided the confirmation everyone was waiting for:

the bees were alive.

The story quickly spread around the world.

Amid images of destruction, the survival of three small honey bee colonies became an unexpected symbol of resilience.

Why Keep Bees in the Middle of Paris?

A cathedral rooftop may seem like an unusual location for an apiary.

But honey bees can live surprisingly well in cities when appropriate forage and habitat are available.

Paris contains parks, gardens, balconies, tree-lined streets, and other flowering spaces that can provide bees with nectar and pollen throughout portions of the year.

Urban beekeeping has consequently become visible across the city.

Notre-Dame isn't even the only famous Parisian landmark associated with bees. Hives have been kept at other notable locations around the French capital as well.

It's a reminder that beekeeping isn't limited to farms and rural landscapes.

Beekeepers can sometimes be found in the heart of the world's largest cities.

Bees, Wax, and European Cathedrals

Bees also have a much older connection to churches than Notre-Dame's modern rooftop apiary.

For centuries, beeswax candles were prized by churches throughout Europe.

Before electric lighting, candles provided illumination inside cathedrals and played an important role in religious ceremonies.

Beeswax burned differently from many alternative candle materials available historically and became highly valued.

So while Notre-Dame's rooftop colonies were a modern addition, bees and their products have been connected with European religious life for centuries.

Notre Dame Rises Again

The story didn't end with the fire.

After years of extraordinary restoration work, Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened in December 2024.

Craftspeople, architects, historians, engineers, donors, and countless others contributed to bringing one of the world's most recognizable landmarks back to life.

The survival of its bees remains a small but memorable chapter in that larger story.

Three hives weren't the most important thing saved that night.

But their survival captured people's imagination for a reason.

A Small Symbol of Resilience

Honey bee colonies are remarkable communities.

Thousands of individual bees work together to protect the colony, care for developing bees, gather food, regulate the hive environment, and survive changing conditions.

The Notre-Dame fire placed three colonies in extraordinary circumstances.

And they made it through.

Their story connects ancient architecture, modern urban beekeeping, disaster, restoration, and the enduring relationship between humans and honey bees.
