How Do Honey Bees Survive Winter? Inside a Winter Beehive

Honey bees don't hibernate when winter arrives. Discover how a colony stays warm, eats stored honey, protects its queen, and survives until flowers return.


When temperatures drop and flowers disappear, you might wonder: where do honey bees go in winter?

They don't migrate south. And unlike some insects, the honey bee colony doesn't simply hibernate until spring.

Instead, thousands of bees remain together inside their hive, using stored honey and an extraordinary survival strategy to keep the colony — and especially their queen — alive through winter.

Here's what happens inside a beehive when it's freezing outside.

Do Honey Bees Hibernate?

Not exactly.

Honey bees remain active inside the hive throughout winter, although their activity changes dramatically as temperatures fall.

Instead of flying from flower to flower, the colony gathers together inside the hive and forms what's known as a winter cluster.

Think of it as a living, breathing heating system made from thousands of bees.

How Do Bees Stay Warm in Winter?

Honey bees generate heat using their bodies.

Bees cluster tightly together around the queen and other members of the colony. Bees within the cluster can activate their flight muscles without actually flying, generating heat.

The cluster isn't static.

Bees can change positions so individuals aren't permanently exposed to the colder exterior. The colony also adjusts the cluster as conditions inside and outside the hive change.

It's an extraordinary example of thousands of individual insects functioning together as one colony.

What Do Bees Eat During Winter?

Honey.

Throughout the warmer months, worker bees collect nectar from flowers and bring it back to the hive.

The colony transforms that nectar into honey and stores it inside the comb.

Those honey reserves become especially important when winter arrives and flowering plants are scarce or unavailable.

The colony gradually consumes its stored honey for energy as it makes its way through winter.

This is one reason responsible beekeeping requires careful management of a colony's food stores.

Why Beekeepers Don't Simply Take All the Honey

When beekeepers harvest honey, they have an important responsibility: the colony needs food, too.

How much honey a colony requires depends on factors including climate, colony size, hive configuration, and the length and severity of winter.

There isn't one universal number that's appropriate for every hive in every location.

Experienced beekeepers evaluate their colonies and local conditions to determine whether sufficient stores remain for winter.

In some circumstances, a beekeeper may also need to provide supplemental feed.

Is Cold the Biggest Threat to a Beehive?

Cold weather is certainly challenging, but simply keeping a hive as warm as possible isn't the answer.

Moisture can also become a serious problem.

Warm, humid air produced by the colony can rise inside a cold hive and create condensation. If that moisture accumulates and drips onto the bees, it can create dangerous conditions.

That's why winter hive management often involves balancing protection from harsh weather with appropriate ventilation and moisture management.

The correct approach depends heavily on the local climate and hive setup.

What Do Beekeepers Do to Prepare for Winter?

Winter preparation can begin well before the first hard freeze.

Depending on their region and management practices, beekeepers may:

  • Evaluate the colony's population and overall health
  • Check available honey stores
  • Monitor and manage Varroa mites
  • Reduce unnecessary hive space
  • Protect colonies from wind and severe weather
  • Manage ventilation and moisture
  • Install appropriate winter protection where needed
  • Monitor food stores throughout winter

There is no single winter setup that's right for every beekeeper.

A colony experiencing a Minnesota winter faces very different conditions from one overwintering in Tennessee.

Do Honey Bees Ever Leave the Hive During Winter?

Yes, when conditions allow.

On warmer winter days, honey bees may briefly leave the hive.

One reason is something called a cleansing flight.

Bees avoid defecating inside their hive whenever possible. If they've been confined by cold weather for an extended period, a sufficiently warm day can give them an opportunity to fly outside and relieve themselves before returning.

You may therefore occasionally see honey bees flying during winter even though very little is blooming.

What About Native Bees?

Honey bees are only one part of the bee world.

Many native bee species have completely different strategies for surviving winter. Depending on the species, they may overwinter underground, inside plant stems, beneath leaves, or in other protected areas.
