Coffee and bees have more in common than you might expect.

Before coffee becomes the roasted beans we grind for our morning cup, it begins as a flowering plant. And those small, fragrant flowers attract bees and other pollinators.

So, do bees pollinate coffee?

Yes. Bees can play an important role in coffee pollination, particularly for coffee varieties that depend on cross-pollination. Even self-fertile coffee plants can benefit from visits by pollinators.

It's another fascinating example of how pollinators are connected to the foods and drinks we enjoy every day.

Where Does Coffee Come From?

Coffee beans aren't actually beans.

They're seeds found inside the fruit of plants belonging to the genus Coffea. The fruit is commonly called a coffee cherry.

Before those cherries develop, coffee plants produce clusters of small white flowers with a sweet fragrance.

And where there are flowers, there are often bees.

Bees visit coffee flowers looking for nectar and pollen. As they move among flowers, they can also transfer pollen, helping facilitate pollination.

Does Coffee Need Bees to Grow?

It depends on the type of coffee.

The two major commercially grown coffee species are Arabica (Coffea arabica) and Robusta (Coffea canephora).

Arabica is capable of self-pollination, meaning it doesn't absolutely depend on bees to produce coffee cherries.

But that doesn't make bees irrelevant.

Research has found that visits from bees and other pollinators can benefit coffee production, including potentially improving fruit set and yield under certain growing conditions.

Robusta relies much more heavily on cross-pollination, making the movement of pollen between plants particularly important.

So while it would be an exaggeration to say there would be "no coffee without bees," pollinators can be valuable partners in coffee production.

Do Bees Like Coffee?

They don't line up for an espresso, but bees certainly visit coffee flowers.

Coffee flowers offer nectar and pollen, giving foraging bees a reason to stop by.

Here's where the relationship becomes especially interesting: coffee plants naturally contain caffeine, and small amounts can occur in floral nectar.

Scientists have studied how caffeine affects bee behavior, learning, and memory.

Research suggests that caffeine can influence how bees respond to floral cues. This has led scientists to investigate whether plant chemistry can affect a pollinator's likelihood of remembering and revisiting particular flowers.

In other words, the chemistry inside a flower may be part of a much more complicated relationship between plants and their pollinators.

Bees Can Be Valuable to Coffee Farmers

Pollination isn't only an ecological story. It can also be an economic one.

For a farmer, improvements in fruit set, yield, or crop quality can have meaningful financial consequences.

That's particularly important because much of the world's coffee is produced by farmers whose livelihoods can be affected by changes in weather, pests, disease, market prices, and agricultural productivity.

Healthy populations of pollinators can therefore be part of a larger agricultural ecosystem supporting coffee production.

Coffee Farms Can Help Bees, Too

The relationship works both ways.

Coffee-growing landscapes can provide habitat and food for pollinators, particularly when farms include diverse flowering plants, trees, and surrounding natural vegetation.

This is one reason biodiversity around agricultural land matters.

A landscape containing many flowering plant species can potentially provide pollinators with food at different times of the year rather than relying on a single crop's relatively short flowering period.

Farm management practices matter, too.

Protecting habitat and using pesticides responsibly can help reduce unnecessary pressure on pollinators and other beneficial insects.

From Coffee Flowers to Your Cup

The next time you pour a cup of coffee, consider everything that happened before it reached you.

A coffee plant had to grow for years before producing its crop. Flowers had to bloom. Pollination had to occur. Coffee cherries had to develop and ripen.

Those cherries were harvested and processed. Their seeds were dried, transported, roasted, packaged, ground, and eventually brewed.

And somewhere near the beginning of that remarkable journey, there's a good chance a bee visited one of those coffee flowers.

Bees Connect More of Our World Than We Realize

Coffee is just one example of the relationship between pollinators, agriculture, and the things we consume every day.

Understanding those connections gives us another reason to appreciate both pollinators and the people working within agricultural systems.
